Last month we introduced the new AI-powered Bing and Microsoft Edge, your assistant for the web – better search, more complete answers, a new conversational experience and the ability to create content. Now we’ve seen Chat reinvent how people search with over 100 million chats. We’ve seen people use chat in a variety of ways, from refining answers to complex questions to entertainment or creative inspiration. Today, we’re taking the chat experience to the next level by making the new Bing more visual.
We’re excited to announce that we’re bringing Bing Image Creator, new AI-powered visual stories, and updated Knowledge Cards to the new Bing and Edge preview. Powered by the advanced DALL∙E model from our partners at OpenAI, Bing Image Creator lets you easily create an image using your own words to describe the image you want to see. Now you can generate both text and visual content from within a chat in one place.
We know that from research The human brain processes visual information 60,000 times faster than text, making visual tools an essential way for people to discover, create and understand. Based on Bing data, images are one of the most searched categories – second only to general web searches. Historically, search was limited to images on the web. Now, there are almost no limits to what you can search and create.
For those in Bing Preview, Bing Image Creator will be fully integrated into the Bing Chat experience, launching first in creative mode. By typing an image description, providing additional context such as location or activity, and selecting an art style, Image Creator generates an image from your imagination. It’s like your creative co-pilot. Just type in a prompt like “draw a picture” or “create a picture” in chat for friends to create a visual for a newsletter or inspiration for redecorating your living room.
Bing Image Creator Preview is also available on Microsoft Edge, making it the first and only browser with an integrated AI-powered image generator. To use Bing Image Creator in Edge, simply click the Bing Image Creator icon in the sidebar or to invoke Bing Chat from within Edge.
Our Microsoft teams are led by us. Principles of responsible AI and the Responsible AI standard To help develop and deploy AI systems responsibly. We are working with our partner OpenAI, who developed DALL∙E, to provide an experience that encourages responsible use of Image Creator, to prevent abuse of Image Creator. We’ve made sure that OpenAI protections and additional protections are built into Image Creator. For example, we put controls in place to limit the generation of harmful or unsafe images. When our system detects that a potentially harmful image may be generated by a request, it closes the request and warns the user. We also make sure that Image Creator images are AI-generated, and add an updated Bing icon to the bottom left corner of each image to indicate that the image was created using Image Creator. We continue to work closely with OpenAI to build, test and evaluate simplifications for our integration.
After making the new Bing available in preview, we’ve been testing it with people to get real-world feedback to learn and improve the experience. People have used it in ways that we expected and others that we didn’t. In this spirit of learning and continuing to responsibly build new capabilities, we’ll be rolling out Bing Image Creator in an intensive approach on the fly with a group of preview users before expanding more broadly. Initially, we’ll only include Image Creator in Bing Chat’s creative mode, and our goal is to make it available in a more consistent and accurate mode over time. We’re also making some ongoing improvements to how Image Creator works in multiple casual conversations. We believe the best way to bring these technologies to market is through careful testing in an open space where everyone can provide feedback.
New AI-powered visual stories and knowledge cards
To support the evolving visual search experience, we’re making Stories and Knowledge Cards 2.0 available to all Bing users. Stories provide a more engaging way to search and interact with content by featuring images and short videos. Also new to Bing users today, Knowledge Cards 2.0 is an AI-powered data-driven experience that delivers interesting facts and key information at a glance. Updated to include interactive, dynamic content such as charts, graphs, timelines, visual stories and more. With these updates and more to come, our goal is to find answers in Bing and Edge and deliver immersive experiences that make the web more fun, useful and entertaining.
