To make the WebOS platform more efficient, LG partnered with Xumo to include an additional streaming app feature called LG Channels (formerly LG Channel Plus).
While the Xumo app is an option for some other brands, LG includes it as part of the basic WebOS experience for select models of 2012-2018 LG LED/LCD or OLED FHD and UHD smart TVs running or updated to WebOS 4.0 in addition to Select 2019 models running WebOS 4.5.

LG Channels content navigation
Once activated, you can access LG channels directly from the icon on the main menu bar that runs along the bottom of your TV screen.
When you click the LG channels icon, it takes you to a full page channel navigation menu.
As you scroll through the list, a brief description of each channel you highlight will be displayed at the top of the screen. You’ll also notice that each “channel” has an assigned number, which you can also use to access the channel if you don’t want to scroll.
You can star your favorite channels so they are easy to find later too.
In all cases, when you find what you want, select it to view it.
LG channel list integrated with antenna tv lists
If you receive over-the-air TV via antenna and also have LG channels activated, you can access both via Live TV on the LG TV menu bar.
When you select the Live TV icon, you will have access to an aggregated list of Live TV and LG Channels. LG’s channel offerings are integrated with your TV’s OTA channel listings, so you don’t have to choose one or the other. You can browse everything at once.
Unlike cable/satellite and over-the-air services, over-the-air TV viewers do not have to leave the main channel selection menu to access the new internet broadcasting channels provided by LG Channels.
For OTA TV viewers, LG Channels provides smoother content access and navigation, making it easier and faster to find that favorite show or relevant content.
OTA TV channels start with a number or a letter, while LG channels always start with the letter ‘IP’.
LG channels with other names
XUMO has also expanded the LG Channels concept to other TV brands, including:
- Hisense / Sharp: 60 channels are available through the default input selection feature.
- Magnavox, Sanyo, Philips Roku TVs, and Roku Media Streamers: The XUMO app can be added to Roku media streaming devices and Roku TVs via the Roku Channel Store.
- Samsung: Xumo is available through the Samsung Play Store.
- Physio: Available through Vizio TVs that feature additional Internet apps. Vizio is also offering an additional alternative in partnership with Pluto TV which is referred to as WatchFree on 2018 models going forward.
bottom line
LG’s partnership with XUMO is part of an ongoing trend that is obliterating the steps normally needed to access broadcast, cable, satellite, and streaming content over the Internet.
Instead of the consumer having to figure out which list contains a particular content provider or app, it can all be in one integrated list similar to the channel guide you might find for cable or satellite television.
Where your shows come from isn’t the main concern – your TV needs to be able to access them and deliver them to you without you having to find them.
For the best access speed and performance, LG/XUMO suggests an internet speed of at least 5 Mbps.
